WASHINGTON — Canada’s Denis Shapovalov will retain his rating factors and prize cash after interesting his disqualification from the quarterfinals of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, the ATP introduced Monday.
Shapovalov misplaced the primary set 7-6 (5) in a match towards American Ben Shelton on Friday and trailed 6-3 in a tiebreaker within the second set when he threw his racket to the courtroom and commenced shouting at a fan within the stands.
As Shelton was about to serve for triple match level, the 25-year-old Shapovalov once more argued with a fan. He was given an unsportsmanlike conduct code violation by the umpire, who then summoned a supervisor.
The ATP introduced that the lack of rating factors and prize cash, which is mechanically utilized when a participant defaults, was a disproportionate penalty for Shapovalov’s actions.
